Momma's to do list...

the "H" litter

Due Date July 25th

could be anytime between the 20th to the 29th

ultrasound June 28th

count puppies, either do or don't open the reservation list

(part of the ultrasound they give me an estimate size of litter and how far along she is)

give personality tester heads up approximate date of delivery/date of testing

updates on blog each week with pictures and/or videos

measure girth

last week of pregnancy each inch from non-pregnant girth (16") is approximately one puppy

(for a standard litter is usual, this litter will be off due to moyen size pups)

La Roux gets her special meal every morning of raw dog food and Life's Abundance

start taking her temp from about the 20th on

keep a close eye on her

a drop of temp to 96-97 for two readings puppies should arrive within 48 hours

(several rule of thumbs and our best guessing what's going on in there for the safety of momma and babies, anything out of the normal we take them to the vets)

About two weeks before puppies are due

we will have a guessing chart for how many boys and how many girls and color (light to dark reds, apricots) as we do each litter, the person closest to the correct # of boys and girls and color gets a prize ... it's just fun ... open to anyone, of course we post everyone's guess.  You don't have to be on the reservation list to submit your guess.

nicknames & color coding of each puppy for ID'g later

send out email announcements to reservation list

schedule personality testing with tester

schedule facility for personality testing
send in the AKC registration for the litter

weight and progress for the litter's chart

measure and weigh puppies twice a day for the first week

then daily, then weekly

put pictures, videos on the blog

puppies tails docked and dewclaws removed three days old

About one month old, take stools to vets to evaluate for parasites

Week 6

take stools in to evaluate, most likely worm puppies

payment is due in full for picking reservation list

once paid puppy packets go out to the people waiting to pick out their puppies


before the personality testing puppies will be graded
each puppy's price will be determined

a caniche moyen poodle is designated as 14-18" at the shoulders

Week 7

About Day 49 is the www.volhard.com testing
everyone on the reservation list is invited to the testing

take them there, have a good time, bring them home

send out emails to reservation list with puppy scores

Call owners for their picks

put available puppies not chosen on blog/website

mail out the puppy's AKC registration papers

Week 8
The day they turn 8 wks old they go to the vets and get wormed and their first puppy shot, vet checked, each puppy comes with a copy of their visit as their health record.


any puppies that need to be shipped will need a health certificate ($75) and a crate ($50 unless you want to mail it back, I can have the crate without charging you).  If the vet or the crate is less or more we charge accordingly, we don't charge you a handling fee.  Jim schedules the flight, I take them to the airport live cargo, they weigh them and give me their charge, they fly out C.O.D. to their new family.  I come home and email the tracking # and info.  I ask their new family to call or email me to know they got there safely.  We track their flight until we see them landed, but we still like to hear from their owner to know they are fine ... we are very connected to these puppies, we want to know they've been received well and any feedback how the puppy was received  by the airline.


After first shots and worming, puppies are ready to go home.

what do you do with the puppies?

neurally stimulate puppies daily from birth

bath them weekly, trim their nails weekly

hug them, cuddle with them, carry them around the house

play with them outside, play in water, let them taste grass

change locations, temperature, textures

play with them in different areas in different ways

encourage puppies to use the potty park

let pups experience outside and pottying without the potty park

and everything in between

Nicknames

This is the "H" litter

I can't seem to think of a theme for this "H" litter

hillbillies... hellions ... LOL 

I think we will just use favorite names or celebrity names

I nickname them as they are born and give them a color collar identification

I don't put the collar on them if I can tell them apart

the identification is to keep track of their growth, if a puppy starts to loose weight it's easier to catch right away what could be wrong when I'm weighing them every day.  I can supplement a puppy that's not as big to get enough food, so ID'g them is very useful.

not to worry, we rarely have problems with the puppies, but I'm pretty hands on

a lighter colored girl will be nicknamed Honey

would be fun if people have some "H" nicknames, please post what you like

Today is Week Two (Day 8)

What's going On with La Roux' pregnancy


Days 7 to 14

Between days 7 and 14, the cell will start being a four-cell, and will then separate into 64 cells. At this time the embryos enter the uterus.

La Roux is eating Life's Abundance high quality kibble, every morning she gets a mix of OC Red Rock Raw with her kibble and a NuVet vitamin.  She's eating heartily as always, jumping around and runs fast fast fast.  She doesn't "feel" pregnant yet.  Her season has almost stopped, the first sign of being pregnant is the quality of the discharge changes immediately, the labia stays swollen since her estren level stay high.


Today is ear plucking, nail trimming, and brushing out mini-spa, La Roux had a bath this weekend, she'll get a full body trim for the summer weather soon, once she's completely out of season I'll get a picture of her and Viktor together.

Ultrasound is scheduled for June 28th when we do a puppy count.

Our new owners waiting for their puppies are always happy to know how many are on the way and we can accept more than five deposits depending on what the ultrasound says.

La Roux' season has changed, #1 sign that she's pregnant

started her on a morning mix of Red Rock Raw and Life's Abundance kibble

she's eating enthusiastically and gaining weight

this is the tough time for Viktor, he knows she's in season but we can't put them together, they have bred enough.  By the end of the week life around here will be back to normal.

will let you know when the ultrasound is scheduled

that's when we count the fetuses and open the reservation list again if there's a higher count of pups

La Roux x Viktor

a cute story if you'd like to know the happings of the mating...

We let them jump around not knowing if she were ready completely yet or not.  She wasn't telling him no, so we are like ... ok, let them be.  Well, as it turns out they did tie. 


so the story...
It was dark and they wanted to be as far in the yard as possible ... we kept checking on them.  Jim walks towards them see what was going on.  They were tied.  La Roux barked at him like - a lot ... this is private Jim, go away!  He comes in and tells me, I laugh, go out do the same thing, go out trying to see in the dark and sure enough, she barks at me too ... like ... this is private I said!  I come into the house we both laughing.

tonight?  tried to have them stay in the family room so we could watch them ... to help out if needed, not just to be nosy.   They jumped around for about 30 minutes, we're like, hmm, bet they want privacy.  Opened the doggie door, they zoomed outside and was tied within minutes.  

La Roux likes privacy that's for sure.

Due July 25th

will have an ultrasound half way to confirm pregnancy (like we won't know - lol) and get a close count.

started her on her special meal today, cottage cheese & raw meat mixed with kibble.  She loved it and felt very special.

Day 9 season

La Roux is interested, Viktor doesn't think she's sexy enough today, should be about day 12 before they breed

La Roux gets her summer cut today, Viktor had his, looks so cute

Viktor has grown!

Viktor is 15 1/4" as we thought he would get over 15", he's officially a standard poodle  --  caniche moyen

La Roux is holding at 17", her weight and height is staying the same

she will probably grow a tiny bit having puppies

once she's half way pregnant we will confirm via an ultrasound

It's official, La Roux has come into season

puppies will come about July 27th, 2012

it's $250 to get on the list, puppies are chosen by the new owners after their personality testing that if you are on the reservation list you are invited to.  The personality testing is always somewhere else with someone the puppies don't know.  If you are on the reservation list, I'll let you know when it is

I THINK La Roux is getting puffy and a discharge that's lots more than usual

she could get this started pretty soon ... we will see ... I'll put it all over our website and here in big letters when she does.   If you are on the reservation list, you'll be the first email sent out.
